Your China Adoption Dossier

What is a dossier? The official definition is "a collection of papers containing detailed information about a particular person or subject (usually a person's record). In this case, the record is being compiled on the adoptive parents. In order to adopt a child from China, you will be required to collect a series of documents that tell the CCAA about you, your family, your health, and your finances.

A lot of adoption agencies will provide a parent workbook or some sort of document outlining the dossier process. This webpage is not intended to replace the guidelines of your agency, only supplement them. Also keep in mind that some agencies have extra requirements beyond what the CCAA requires. For example, the CCAA requires the medical forms in the dossier to be signed by either a M.D. or a D.O. However, some agencies maintain that you can only use an M.D. So please check with your agency along each step of the way!

What's In The Dossier?

• A Completed Home Study
• Certified birth certificates for both parents
• Marriage License
• Divorce/death decrees if applicable
• Medical statement of good health for both parents
• Letter of Employment for both parents
• Financial Statement
• Police Reports for both parents
• I-800A Approval
• 6 photos of your family life
• 3 copies of each parent's passport
• 2 passport photos of each parent
• Adoption Application Letter (or Letter of Intent)

**Note: Do NOT begin working on a dossier until you have contracted with an agency and been given guidance about these steps.

The Basic Steps

• Gather all the documents needed. File for I-800A approval with your completed homestudy.



• Notarize, state certify, and authenticate the documents in your dossier, including your I-800A once it arrives.
• Send your dossier to your agency!

Again, please check with your agency about this. Some agencies only ask you to acquire the documents and they do the rest. Some have you acquire the documents AND do the notarization, certification, and authentication of each document. Some agencies give you the option. Follow the directions of your agency.



• If you have completed an adoption within the past year, you may be eligible to reuse your dossier for a second adoption.
