UPDATE: The "reuse dossier" program has turned out to be somewhat of a fiasco in my opinion.....it is not well organized and families who are reusing their dossier seem to be waiting LONGER than if they had started from scratch. Of course this is not true in all cases, but I think this program is causing more trouble than it is worth. Just something to be aware of if you are considering this; I would have a frank talk with your agency and see what they have experienced with their clients who are reusing. I would be tempted just to start from scratch if we were faced with the choice of reusing our dossier for another adoption.
Reusing Your Adoption Dossier
The CCAA has recently released new regulations for their Special Focus program. Families who choose to adopt a Special Focus child may now reuse their dossier from a previous adoption in order to complete the new adoption. Definition of Special Focus The CCAA has now classified children that have been on the shared list over 2 months as Special Focus children. Also, some children are classified outright as Special Focus from the beginning. Special Focus children are usually older, have moderate/severe needs, are boys, or have been on the list longer than two months. Please Note: This program is still relatively new, and there are only a small number of families in the process of reusing their dossier for a new adoption. We are still learning more about how this will work out for families. Updates will be posted here as we learn of them. Rules - You have up to one year from the date of your last adoption to reuse your dossier.
Example: You traveled to China and adopted your daughter on September 3, 2010. You have until September 3, 2011 to identify your new child and to submit a
Letter of Intent.
If you do not submit LOI in time, you will have to begin a new dossier. - The child must be classified as Special Focus in order for you to reuse your dossier.
- You do not need to have completed any other paperwork at the time you submit LOI. As long as you have the LOI in before that one year deadline, you may reuse your dossier.
- In general, you must use the same agency you used for your last adoption. There have been a few families allowed to switch to a new agency and still reuse their dossier, but the CCAA seems to only be allowing this with certain agencies.
- You must obtain a new I800A approval and new/updated home study if you were not already approved for two children on your last I800A. Once the CCAA has received your I800A and new home study, they will issue the Letter of Acceptance. We are not sure how long families will wait for the LOA at this time.
