Shamian Island
All American adoptive families will spend the second week of their trip to China in Guangzhou, Guangdong Province. This is where the American Consulate is located. American families must come here to apply for and receive their child's visa allowing them to enter the United States.
The most popular location for families to stay during their second week is Shamian Island! The US consulate used to be located on Shamian Island, which is why it became such a gathering place for adoptive families! Every week, a new load of families arrive for the week with their precious new children. The entire area caters to adoptive families. The island is fairly small, just a few blocks long! It's tropical in climate and the abundance of adoptive families make it somewhat of a haven. Visit the following links to read more: History of Shamian Island Shamian Travel Guide
Hotels and Attractions
Now that the American consulate is no longer located on the Island, there is a small trend away from staying on the Island. However, in keeping with tradition, the majority of adoptive families still choose to stay on the Island for the atmosphere and home-like feel of the Island. There are many well known shops and restaurants in the Island that have been become somewhat famous among the adoptive community. Even those that choose not to stay on the Shamian usually walk or take a taxi to the Island at least once during their stay! The most well known hotels for adoptive families on the Island are the White Swan Hotel and the Guangdong Victory Hotel. Families who choose to stay off the Island often select the Holiday Inn Shifu, the Garden Hotel, or the China Hotel. White Swan Hotel Guangdong Victory Hotel Holiday Inn Shifu China Hotel (Marriott) Garden Hotel NOTE: It is currently rumored that the White Swan Hotel will be closing in August of 2011 for one year of renovations. This has been verified by a few adoption agencies, but we are not sure of the accuracy of this information. The White Swan Hotel has been saying they will do this for years. Please consult with your agency if you plan to travel after August of this year.
