As you should already know, parents adopting a child from China are required to make a trip overseas to complete the adoption!! This is the highlight of the adoption experience for most families.

You will be in China for about two weeks. You will spend the first week in your child's province to finalize the adoption and obtain your child's Chinese passport.

If you are from America, you will spend the second week of your trip in Guangzhou, Guangdong province where the US Consulate is located. This is where you will obtain your child's immigrant visa into the United States!

Travel Arrangements

Flights to China

  • Some adoption agencies arrange all of your travel for you including flights. Others ask you to arrange your own flights while they take care of the China details (hotels, guide, transportation, etc..)

If you will be booking your own flights to China, there are quite a few good travel agents that specialize in adoption travel.

  • Once your Consulate Appointment has been scheduled, your adoption agency will let you know what dates and times to be in China. If your agency asks you to book your own flights, they may have a list of recommended travel agents to work with. Or, simply book the flights with the airlines directly.
Vaccinations

  • It is not required that travelers to China receive any vaccinations. However, many adoptive parents feel that it is in the best interest of their family's health to do so. Ask your family doctor or visit the Center for Disease Control (CDC) for suggestions on which vaccines are recommended for international travel to China.
  • Immigrating adoptive children are required to have vaccinations in China before being allowed to enter the USA. However, effective as of November 2010, Hague I800 families can now use the DS-1981 Vaccination Affidavit Waiver which allows newly adopted children to be EXEMPTED from the vaccine requirement in China. Families must notarize this waiver and take it with them to China.
  • NOTE: As of April 2011, this form has been updated to include wording for both I600 and I800 families.

Chinese Visas

  • You must obtain a Chinese visa in order to enter China. Some adoption agencies will do this step for you, but most ask you to get your own. You can apply for visas through any Chinese consulate in the USA, regardless of where you live. A courier must walk your passports and visa applications into the consulate of your choice in person.

Travel Paperwork

  • In order to complete your adoption from China, you'll need to take a lot of paperwork with you. Almost all adoption agencies will have a checklist or handbook of some sort to assist you with this. I have compiled a list of the most commonly used documents to give you a general idea of what you'll need to bring with you.

One Parent Travel

  • Both parents are not required to travel, although it is highly recommended that both parents do so. If you are an I800 Hague family, there is no extra paperwork involved if only one spouse travels.
  • You must take a Power of Attorney (fully authenticated) so that you can sign documents for your non traveling spouse. The adoption will be final in China and your new child will be an automatic US citizen even though only one parent traveled.

Sample Trip Itinerary

  • Most trips to China follow a basic format that revolves around the paperwork process at the Provincial Civil Affairs Office and the United States Consulate in Guangzhou.
